Frederic Whitehurst Interview October 5, 2012

Dr. Frederic Whitehurst - Former FBI Special Agent - Attorney - Forensics Consultant - Lecturer - October 5, 2012

Dr. Frederic Whitehurst, formerly a Supervisory Special Agent for the FBI and a top Scientist at the FBI Crime Lab, Dr. Whitehurst uncovered sloppy work, forged test results, contamination and mishandling of evidence.  When he brought this information to his superiors he was ignored, or met with retaliation, which resulted in a letter writing campaign of nearly 250 letters, over a 5 year period, to shed light on a system of corruption that put people behind bars on evidence that was not what it was cracked up to be.  In a nutshell, the FBI was pressuring scientists to lie.  Dr. Whitehurst attended law school, in the evenings while working for the FBI, and now practices Criminal Law in North Carolina, and is available as a Forensics Consultant, and Lecturer.

Along with his attorney's, Dr. Whitehurst sued President Bill Clinton, Attorney General Janet Reno, FBI Director Louis Freech, the FBI, the U.S. Dept. of Justice, the U.S. Government, and essentially won on all counts.  Dr. Whitehurst was forced into a position of defending himself from the retaliation in a lawsuit that resulted in the FBI crime lab being subjected, for the first time, to outside oversight, and improvements in procedures.

Although the FBI was made aware of the problems a dozen years ago, they never notified all the defendants in the cases which were effected by tainted evidence.  This year, they continue to review cases and look for convictions that were the result of using tainted evidence.

Dr. Whitehurst has been involved in several high profile cases, including the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and the Oklahoma City bombing case.  We'll talk about Veterans with PTSD and cannabis, as he served 3 tours in Vietnam, where he came across a diary of a young female Vietcong Physician who was killed in the war.  Dr. Whitehurst held onto the diary for 35 years, until it was reunited with the mother and three sisters of the woman, and later published as a book, "Last Night I Dreamed of Peace," and made into a world-wide popular movie titled "Don't Burn."

Dr Fred Whitehurst is one of the top experts in the country regarding the forensic identification of cannabis.  He explains how the testing procedures that have imprisoned millions of Americans is actually junk science, and why you sometimes may want to request an evidentiary hearing if you are busted with marijuana.

Dr. Whitehurst is featured in the book "Tainting Evidence - Inside the Scandals at the FBI Crime Lab."
