B.E. Smith - Grower Featured on Discovery Channel's Weed Country - Veteran - April 19, 2013
B.E. Smith is a respected community leader in Trinity County California, one of the legs of the famed Emerald Triangle, where some of the best cannabis in the world is grown.
After B.E. came home from the war in Vietnam he found out in 1972 that marijuana worked very well for the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) he experienced as a result of his service.
B.E. began growing it for himself and others under the “Compassionate use Act” or Prop 215 the ballot initiatives title. In 1999 he was sentenced to 27 months in a federal prison after being the first patient/caregiver in California to be convicted post proposition 215, the voter approved initiative that allowed for Medical Marijuana.
Woody Harrelson testified as a character witness for B.E. Smith during the trial but without testimony about medical marijuana law in California the trial wasn’t an exercise in getting to the truth but more of a slam dunk allowed by house rules.
Judge Burrell handed down a longer sentence than what was recommended by the prosecutor calling B.E. “beyond rehabilitation!”
As a constitutionalist B.E. has read the entirety of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, The Vehicle and Criminal Codes of California and has even authored his own book on these matters.
Politically active in Trinity County, B.E. Smith is working to create a “Winery Model” of marijuana production and tourism with other local advocates including Nate Morris and Mike Boutin fellow cast members of “Weed Country” on the the Discovery Channel.
B.E. likes to cut loose once in a while and take a break from the hard work of growing some of the best cannabis in the world, and studying history and laws. When he isn't attending harvest festivals, he's busy doing the Weed Country Harlem Shake.
